15k Worth of Hemp Stolen from South Carolina Farm

Over the years, hemp, a type of cannabis plant, has gained popularity for its industrial and medicinal uses. The police have asked people planning on stealing hemp to re-evaluate their decision because, according to the experts, hemp does not give the high effect. This warning doesn’t seem to have had any effect as several incidents of pulled hemp plants have been reported in South Carolina and elsewhere around the country.

In South Carolina, Horry County Police Department Lieutenant Mark Bonner said that although hemp and marijuana plants are similar, hemp alone is an invaluable product because it has many uses such as making building materials, and the law recommends that the levels of THC remain below 0.3%.

According to the police, over the weekend, a group of young adults targeted a hemp farm, C&C Farms in Conway, where they stole hemp worth thousands of dollars. The police have arrested one culprit who is 17 years old.

Bonner said C&C Farms has several cameras installed to protect their farms; so, the whole incident was captured on camera. The retrieved video surveillance shows that there were several suspects and that they were armed. A cellphone and a handheld cutter were retrieved from the field and filed as evidence.

A jeep was seen driving around the hemp farm several days before the robbery occurred, and the police believe that it was connected to the crime. He added that the crime attracts a hefty fine.

Bonner said that the hemp stolen amounts to fifteen thousand dollars, which in the state of South Carolina, it is classified as grand larceny, and as an adult, you attract a penalty of close to a 10-year jail term.

Hemp grown for industrial use can be used to make products like clothing, cement, and threads. The plant has close to zero levels of THC; therefore, it will not benefit you in any way to steal it for smoking purposes.

Bonner said that in the recent times there has been an increased number of hemp crop robberies and he wants to get ahead of the issue and release information to let those who are stealing know that hemp is not the same as marijuana and it will not give you the high effect you are seeking.

There is an ongoing investigation into the stealing of the hemp crop, and the Horry County Police are requesting any person with information regarding the robbery to report to the nearest station.

In March, Governor Henry McMaster passed a bill for expanding the hemp farming industry in the state through the Department of Agriculture. It is believed that industry players like Green Hygienics Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: GRYN) and HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) strongly condemn such plant thefts and would wish for stiffer penalties to discourage the habit.
