Maine Farmers Fear Federal Hemp Testing Rules Could Lead to Crop Losses

For a lot of hemp producers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) interim final rule on hemp wasn't the Hail Mary they thought it would be. For months, the department was pressured by producers and interested parties to provide a comprehensive regulatory framework for the massive industry that had grown around hemp. Farmers were at a major disadvantage as service providers like banks and insurance companies shied away from working with them. After the USDA published its new rules, states and tribes were given the opportunity to write up their own hemp programs and submit them to the USDA for…

Business Leaders Say Federal Hemp Rules Could Hamper the Smokable Flower Market

Just a year after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the industrial use of hemp and its extracts, the market for cannabidiol (CBD), one of hemp's main extracts, had grown so rapidly it had quickly outpaced regulatory authorities. After months of pressure from stakeholders and politicians, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its interim final rule on hemp. However, as the sector adjusts to the new regulations, there have been fears that they may be a little too tough, especially on the budding smokable hemp industry. USDA Estimates 20 Percent of Hemp Grown in 2020 Will Be Hot

According to the new estimates released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), one in five farms growing hemp in the 2020 planting season would lose its crop because the level of THC would be more than the stipulated federal limit of 0.3%, making the plant illegal. The Hemp Industry Daily released the USDA estimates in a special report, “USDA Hemp Rules: A Handbook for Hemp and CBD Businesses” late last week. The free report, which was released by the USDA on October 31, outlines the contents of the agency’s interim final rules governing the formation of the domestic…

Oregon Hosts Hemp Researchers from China

There's a cannabis revolution going on, and cannabidiol (CBD) is at the helm. For the past few years, cannabis has been gaining popularity, not as a recreational drug, but as a medicine. The 2018 Farm Bill began the revolution, classifying hemp with less than 0.3% THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) as hemp. THC is the compound responsible for cannabis' psychoactive high. Industrial hemp and all its extracts became fair game, legal to plant, market and sell. In the year since industrial hemp and all its extracts became legal, the market for CBD has grown to insane proportions, and it's expected to hit…
