Builders Switch to Hemp in Order to Reduce Pollution

Concerns about the greenhouse gas emissions of the construction industry have led forward-looking entrepreneurs to switch to using hemp which sequesters carbon dioxide while it grows and the structures built use less energy throughout their service life.

Mac Radford, owner of JustBioFiber Structural Solutions based in Calgary (Canada), is one of those entrepreneurs who is overwhelmed by orders coming from eco-conscious people in search of sustainable building materials.

Radford revealed that he has more demand for hemp bricks than his company can currently supply, and that is why the 64-year old has embarked on a $28 million expansion so that the company can make at least 3.5 million hemp bricks every year.

While Mac Radford is already making profits from his venture, the primary motivation behind his effort is to save the environment. He cites research which shows that each cubic meter constructed using hemp products captures 287 pounds of carbon dioxide while each ton of cement that is manufactured generates half a ton of carbon dioxide.

Additionally, structures built using hemp require less energy to keep those buildings habitable while those built using cement and other manufactured products are energy guzzlers. The recognition of these benefits is driving the growth of the hemp construction industry in Canada from sales worth $140 million in 2018 to an estimated $1 billion within the coming five years.

UK Hempcrete’s managing director, Alex Sparrow, agrees with his Canadian counterparts about the future potential of hemp construction materials as mainstream building materials. He says that one key advantage favoring the growth of building with hemp is the ease with which hemp cultivation can be quickly ramped up anywhere in the world.

Sparrow points out that the hemp building sector in the UK is yet to take off fully because of some legal hurdles that still stand in its way. For example, hemp farmers can only earn from the fiber of the plant but they aren’t allowed to extract and sell the oil obtained from the hemp seeds.

As more awareness grows about hemp and its diverse potential, some of those legal bottlenecks will be ironed out and the use of hemp building materials will stop being a product for a niche market and will become a mainstream product that everyone who wishes to construct a building can select for their project.

Industry experts believe the onus is now on sector players like Therma Bright Inc. (TSX.V: THRM) (OTC: THRBF) and TransCanna Holdings Inc. (CSE: TCAN) (FRA: TH8) to ramp up their public awareness efforts about the numerous uses of hemp so that a market can be nurtured for all products made from hemp and not just CBD.
