Celebrity Pitchman Anthony Sullivan Starts Hemp Cultivation to Treat Daughter

There is no doubt that a lot of Americans love cannabidiol (CBD). At least 14% of the American population has used CBD products, and the American CBD market is expected to be worth $23 billion by 2025. Clearly, CBD is a big deal in the U.S., and all kinds of celebrities and athletes have been jumping onto the bandwagon and endorsing CBD products.

Celebrity Pitchman Anthony Sullivan, famous for starring in several Oxiclean Commercials with the late Bill Mays, is the latest celebrity to enter the cannabis industry. His daughter suffers from a rare genetic disorder that has severely reduced her quality of life. “Over the years,” Sullivan explains, “the symptoms have aggravated and created more challenges in maintaining Devon’s health. One minute we’d solve one problem, another would crop up.”

Her condition, so rare it hasn’t been named yet, deteriorated so much that it interfered with everyday activities. The situation became worse two years ago when she started having seizures. A neurologist prescribed anti-seizure medication, but it became apparent that the medication had some significant side effects. Sullivan says she lost 20% of her body weight. “The medication just wrecked her body overall. She lost her personality, and she was absolutely exhausted.”

“As we increased the dosage, I don’t want to use the word zombie, but my kid went from being a very fun kid with special needs to not even being there. She was vacant, unresponsive, and she lost her appetite,” he adds.

Finally, Devon’s mother suggested they try CBD products. Anecdotally, the hemp extract has been effective against an astonishing number of diseases. The list of conditions is long, ranging from high blood pressure and insomnia to chronic pain. The FDA has approved a CBD-based drug to treat seizures in rare childhood epilepsies.

Sullivan was initially reluctant to try CBD, but he was pleasantly surprised by the results. Devon’s symptoms reduced drastically, and she became her animated self again. “I’ve managed to wean my daughter off nearly every single pharmaceutical,” he says. “The only medication she’s on is CBD and that itself speaks to me volumes.”

After visiting a hemp farm, Sullivan decided to dedicate the next chapter of his life to hemp. Despite having little farming experience, he and his business partner David Christian bought 116 acres of land in Plainfield, Vermont and 75,000 cannabis plant seeds.

“My partner Dave and I didn’t just dip our toes in the water. We jumped in the deep end, butt naked,” he says. And the gamble paid off. A year later, the two run one of the biggest independently owned hemp farms on the Eastern seaboard.

“I have never had a passion and a belief in a product like I have in this. This is nature at its best. This is something that can not only help my daughter, but it can also potentially help millions of other families who are looking for an alternative to pharmaceuticals.”

Experts believe that as such testimonies of the benefits of hemp pile up, industry actors like Green Hygienics Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: GRYN) and Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) feel more validated that their products are making a real difference in people’s lives.
