Gov. Polis FDA and USDA to Speak at Denver Hemp Conference

Gov. Jared Polis and officials from the FDA and USDA are lined up to speak at an upcoming hemp conference that will be held in Denver, Colorado on Aug. 15 and 16. This two-day event is organized by the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA).

After the Farm Act of 2018 was signed into law by President Trump, industrial hemp was removed from the list of controlled substances and it now falls under the ambit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The country is waking up to the huge potential of industrial hemp, but players in the CBD industry are still having to operate under a legal grey area since the federal government, through the FDA and USDA, are yet to release regulations upon which players in the industry will operate.

However, the hemp and CBD industries in Colorado are blasting full steam ahead due to the existence of state laws that regulate hemp and its derivatives.

The American Herbal Products Association has taken note of this unique reality in Colorado and has chosen the state as the host of its maiden Hemp-CBD Supplement Congress.

The conference will focus on the future of hemp and CBD in the supplements and dietary industries. These two industries also went through similar regulatory bumps in the 1990’s when the federal government scrambled to catch up with the public and commercial interests of that time.

CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound that is extracted from hemp. It can be used in cosmetics, vaporizers and food as a remedy for various conditions, including anxiety and sleeping disorders. However, the absence of regulatory mechanisms in many states across the country means that it isn’t possible to ascertain how many of those products on the market are effective.

Gov. Polis has variously vowed to do everything in his power to promote the cannabis and hemp industries in Colorado so that the state can play a leading role in these two industries. His agreement to speak at the Hemp-CBD Supplement Congress is further proof that he is walking the talk and will do everything he can to attain the goals for which he recently launched an online tool through which members of the public could hold the state government accountable for the realization of those goals.

The presence of Polis, William Richmond (chief of operations of the USDA hemp program) and a high-ranking representative of the FDA who is yet to be named adds credence to the clout of AHPA as a leading voice in the hemp industry.

Analysts believe that industry players like Organigram Holdings Inc. (TSX.V: OGI) (NASDAQ: OGI) and SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) must be wishing that all states were as proactive as Colorado on matters of the hemp industry.
