In 1941, Henry Ford pioneered the concept of making plant-based vehicles, which were set to revolutionize the automotive industry. However, this wasn’t taken any further, until this year when the first hemp car rolled off the production line.
The founder and CEO of Renew Sports Cars, Bruce Dietzen, flagged off the first hemp-bodied sports car. The sports car is made from three plies of woven hemp instead of using the fibreglass in-car panelling. The hemp composites are considered viable substitutes because they have the most significant specific energy absorption (SEA), which means it can withstand massive pressure. The hemp panels are said to be ten times stronger than the traditional vehicle steel.
Besides, the hemp car reduces the amount of carbon dioxide used instead of adding more to the environment because they utilize carbon-negative technology.
The hemp sports car from Renew Sports Cars which is made from hemp fibres is held together with a soy-based epoxy. The car is faster compared to the traditional vehicle and is also more fuel-efficient.
The car enthusiast said that it cost him $200,000 to build the sports car and an additional $200,000 in lost earnings.
According to Dietzen, the building of the sports car was not easy because of the unavailability of the hemp material. Even though the plant material was sourced from China and Romania, Bruce is hopeful that with the passage of 2018 Farm Bill, it will be possible to get ample supplies of hemp fiber at home very soon.
Countries across Europe have also adopted the concept of using hemp to pursue weight saving and even environmental sustenance for the auto industry.
Besides its strength, the hemp material has other advantages which include durability. According to Dietzen, the material can be recycled numerous times, unlike biodegradable products. Dietzen further added that by adopting the hemp materials in making various products, such as “hempcrete,” the world would be a better place to live in.
The CEO of Renew Sports Cars is also working on making other products using the hemp material. These materials include an electric bike and also a wind turbine.
According to industry analysts, ventures like those undertaken by Bruce Dietzen confirm what hemp industry actors like Therma Bright Inc. (TSX.V: THRM) (OTC: THRBF) and TransCanna Holdings Inc. (CSE: TCAN) (FRA: TH8) have always stated that the applications of industrial hemp are nearly limitless.
