Levi Teams Up With Outerknown to Bring You Cottonized Denim

Two well-known clothing brands, Levi’s and Outerknown, have teamed up to make cottonized hemp denim that is stronger than cotton yet softer than plain hemp. This new material was debuted in March and the perfected version in the famous “true blue” denim was unveiled on Monday.

These fabrics are going to be showcased in the fall/winter collection of the two brands. The collection includes a trucker’s jacket lined with fleece, western shirts, jeans and tees. All these are finished using water-less techniques and the fabrics are fully recyclable.

Additionally, the hemp that the company uses to make its clothing items depends entire on rain during its cultivation, and this makes the crop to be free from chemicals as well as being water-friendly.

Generally speaking, hemp doesn’t need any fertilizers or herbicides, and it requires half the amount of water to grow when compared to what cotton requires.

However, one major shortcoming of hemp is that its fibers are rough and stiff, and this makes the clothes made from only hemp less desirable when compared to cotton fabrics that are softer. This is where the process of cottonizing the hemp comes in, resulting in a fabric that is nearly as soft as cotton and one may not easily tell the two materials apart. The cottonization process requires minimal energy, so this leaves the entire process fully eco-friendly.

Levi’s describes the whole process of making cottonized hemp clothing as the distillation of several techniques needed to transform fashion and move it forward. The process has entailed developing new design skills that will enable fashion houses to stay competitive in an uncertain environment. To Levi’s and Outerknown, design must be the driver to the solutions since it is part of the problem.

When fabric makers step up like this and start making clothing from hemp, it gives hemp farmers an assurance that the hemp industry will be here for decades since the end uses of the crop are nearly limitless.

At the moment, hemp farmers are mainly growing varieties intended for CBD extraction, but as the years roll by, growing hemp for CBD extraction may become less lucrative as the supply of the plant material peaks and prices start leveling off or even dropping. If this drop coincides with the fiber side of things hitting peak level, then farmers can be sure that they will always rely on this plant as a source of their livelihood.

For this reason, experts are in agreement that industry players like TransCanna Holdings Inc. (CSE: TCAN) (FRA: TH8) and VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB) celebrate each time they hear developments, such as the unveiling of hemp clothing, which deepen the reach of this newly legalized plant.
