Ohio Starts Receiving Hemp Cultivation and Processing Applications

The Department of Agriculture in Ohio started accepting applications for hemp cultivation and hemp processing licenses on March 3. Growers who are interested in applying should head to the department’s website for more details. The application is purely online, and it would include a mapping tool, which would help farmers indicate where they are planning to grow hemp.

Although hemp can be cultivated across the state, the Department of Agriculture must approve all growing sites, and farmers can use clones or seeds to grow the crop. The department stipulated that the clones can only be obtained from licensed greenhouses or processors, and the seeds can be bought from agricultural businesses.

The department’s response time on the applications will depend on whether the application form is complete, the number of applications submitted, and how quickly they can perform the background check. ODA would also review the applications on a first-come basis, and the Ohio Department of Agriculture has no cap on licenses to be issued within a year.

The department further stated that farmers could apply for hemp cultivation licenses between November 1 to 31 March of any year. And this year, ODA has extended the application window to May 1. The permits issued will be valid for three years.

People who have previously been sentenced to a felony involving illegal substances in the last ten years would not be granted permits.

The hemp cultivation license fee is $100, and the yearly permit fee per growing location is $500.

In the application, the grower must provide the address, map, and GPS coordinates for their field, greenhouse, building, or storage facility. They must also give the number of acres they plan on planting.

To complete the application form, processors must have their processing facilities inspected, an exercise that the ODA believes will take several weeks to complete.

The application fee for a processing license is $100, and annual license fees for each processing site are $500 for processing raw grain, $500 for processing fiber, and $3,000 for processing hemp flower.

Universities researching hemp can also apply for permits to cultivate and process hemp.

All applicants and key participants, such as sole proprietors, partners, or executive managers in corporations, must have a background check done before applying. However, non-executive managers, such as farm, field, or shift managers, are excluded.

Hemp is non-psychoactive, and in Ohio, businesses are allowed to sell CBD products sourced within or out of state legally.

Experts are of the view that industry actors, such as HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF), now see that it is now up to interested cultivators and processors to take advantage of the opportunity before them in the hemp sector.
